The remarkable success of Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir continues with Time Magazine naming Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic as the Best Book of 2006 (fiction or nonfiction) and Entertainment Weekly honoring it as their number one pick for Best Non-Fiction book of the year!
Bechdel, already an LGBT icon and Lambda Literary Award winner for her nationally syndicated comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, has gone far beyond breaking into the mainstream, racking up kudos all year long from a multitude of publications such as The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, and The London Times as an important graphic literary milestone.
Seven years in the making, Fun Home is an autobiographical look at Bechdel’s childhood in rural Pennsylvania, focusing on her father who when not teaching English and seducing his students, ran a funeral home and helped feed Alison’s literary education before taking his own life.
You can catch Bechdel at the upcoming New York Comic-Con, being held February 23-25, 2007, at Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan. Plus continue checking Alison’s website for news about other appearances in the upcoming year.
