An intimate crowd was very eager to see Paul Pope and Bob Schreck take the dais at last weekend’s Baltimore Comic-Con. Billed as a “cage match,” the panel was surprisingly low-key, extremely low-tech (no slides) and very casual.

New LGBT Comix at Comic-Con 2010 Report #2! Brian Anderson, Dave Davenport, Steve MacIsaac, Desmond Miller and Michael Troy!
by David Stanley, posted July 27th, 2010
[Print-ready Version]

As promised, here’s Part Two of my Guide to new comics that made their debuts at Comic-Con. So much new stuff, enough to make a girl dizzy.

The lovely and talented Brian Andersen brought the latest, greatest, super-tacular So Super Duper #10 with story by Brian and art by the superb Celina Hernandez. You can get a preview of it on Brian’s website along with his other new book called Friend of Dorothy (story by Brian, art by Neftali Centeno) where Scott-John meets Gorlindo, The Good Witch from Oz. It looks great. I was so glad to spend some time with Brian at the Prism booth, as he’s always so nice and funny, plus I got to meet his boyfriend Preston, who is a very sweet guy. We always appreciate having Brian at our Prism events.

Steve MacIsaac, the winner of the first Queer Press Grant, presented a new edition of Shirtlifter #1. He redrew and recolored certain sections plus designed a slightly altered alternative cover, along with printing it on a better paper stock. It’s lovely to look at. Get your copy at his website, along with Shirtlifter #2 and #3 plus other works. Funnily enough, talking to Steve I found out he used to live and work in Japan, which is where I grew up. Small big world.

Desmond Miller had a plethora of new books and webcomics to tout at Comic-Con, which was really great to see. First, he showed me Robinson Crusoe in the 6th Dimension which is a retelling of the classic tale with Soldier Robinson Davis trapped in an alternate universe, trying to find her way home while fighting off “strange versions of humanity”. This is published through his Slumbland Press, from which Desmond is also about to launch two webcomics: Bamboo Rock ‘N’ Roll and Western Horizons. Slumberland Press in conjunction with Lousy Fairies Studio has published Night Patrol. Written by Kenne Morrison with art by Sean Freitas, it’s about two fairies who work as detectives for the San Francisco PD, who manage “very human relations” as Desmond described it. It is available through Slumbland Press and the very queer-friendly comic book store, Whatever... in the heart of the Castro in San Francisco.

The fabulous Michael Troy, who had us laughing on the “Divas and Golden Lassoes” panel, unleashed his new (shallow) superteam book, Blonde Squad, with not just one but two covers! The first is a homage to Queen’s famous “Bohemian Rhapsody” image and the second is the hotter-than-hot Betty White cover, which flew off the shelves at Comic-Con. Michael is the author of Homo-Hero's Big Book of Fun and Adventure , a stand-up comic, and channeler of Margot Kidder in her Hollywood heyday in a series of hi-larious video confessionals. Check out his blog for further fun.

Lastly, Master Illustrator Dave Davenport presented Bent Comix #1, which is a sampler of work from the coalition of creators that Dave wrangled together (including Brad Rader, Sean-Z, Sam Saturday, JC Etheredge, Gravity Faggots, Belasco, Justin Hall, Steve MacIsaac and Dave himself) plus beautiful new t-shirts. He has also been hard at work on Hard to Swallow V2. #1 which should be on sale any minute now. You can check out all his comics, shirts, posters, tattoos and everything else at www.dogspunk.com.

Okay now—don’t complain you have nothing to read or wear or put on your walls.

I’ve got lots more new comics to present, so keep your eyes peeled for the next installment soon.
