The Power Within Anti-Bullying Comic From Northwest Press Featured in Towleroad and Bleeding Cool!
by David Stanley, posted July 31st, 2011
[Print-ready Version]

The Power Within from Northwest Press is a comic book tackling the subject of teen bullying and suicide, written by Charles “Zan” Christensen and drawn by Mark Brill. The heartfelt story also features bonus pages from some of comics’ top professionals including Gail Simone (Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey), Phil Jimenez (New X-Men, Wonder Woman), Greg Rucka (Detective Comics, Gotham Central), Matthew Clark (Outsiders, Wonder Woman), Stephen Sadowski (JSA, Warlord of Mars), Dan Parent (Archie, Kevin Keller), Donna Barr (The Desert Peach), Andy Mangels (“Gay Comics”, Iron Man: Beneath the Armor) and Carla Speed McNeil (FINDER).

Towleroad says, “Gay comic creators Mark Brill and Charles 'Zan' Christensen have created what may be the best comic book of the year.” Dorian Wright at postmodernbarney.com says that The Power Within “successfully avoids any hints of maudlin emotion or preachiness. Instead the story feels very honest and is genuinely affecting.” The book was also featured on Bleeding Cool with preview pages.

The story concerns a high school student named Shannon who gets picked on a lot; his dad and teachers think he should just “fit in” more, but that doesn’t help. So Shannon escapes into a super-powered alter-ego whenever he’s in a bad situation. But will the power within be enough to save him?

Copies of The Power Within are available free of charge to youth services organizations and teachers’ groups. Please go to the Northwest Press website to request copies. The book contains discussion questions so that the book can be used as a tool to start a conversation about issues of bullying and harassment. Also listed are resources including The Trevor Project, GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), and the It Gets Better Project.

Read a preview of The Power Within. Charles “Zan” Christensen, publisher of Northwest Press, is the founder of Prism Comics.

Help get the word out! And request your own copy from your local comics retailer. It is being distributed by Diamond Distributors (North America and United Kingdom) — order #JUL111189, Prerogatives/PrideCatalog.com, Last Gasp, Haven Distributors, Bulldog Books (Australia).
