Website: Symptom of the Universe

Bio: Sabin Calvert is a Brooklyn artist who has self-published numerous comics.

His most recent book, Gorgeous Clothed Flies was given the 2010 Award from Printed Matter. 6 pages from the book were featured in Keith Mayerson's NeoIntegrity; Comics Edition show at the Museum for Comics and Cartoon Art.

His newest webcomic, Symptom of the Universe is a story within a story, an old school space opera written by a trans woman who is dying of cancer and estranged from her daughter. The two stories interweave, creating an uneasy balance and implode to create its own elegy. It is a love note to stony space rock as much as it is to the worlds of sci-fi and fantasy as well as a tribute to their authors.

It can be found online at symptomcomics.com and updates every Monday.

His ongoing minicomic Demon of the Fall follows an alcoholic superhero who gets his powers from drinking, combining surreal fantasy with religious themes.

His work has appeared in the Awesomer anthology (Top Shelf), World War Three Illustrated and Pile Driver, an anthology of wrestling comics.

His day job is making signs in Manhattan and doing freelance design and artwork for companies and musicians.

THE ANGELUS VOL. 1
[Color Commentary, Posted 1/13/11]
I began re-reading Witchblade around the time when Ron Marz and Stjepan Sejic took over as writer and artist respectively of the series. At this time, Sara was pregnant and a new wielder in one Danielle Baptiste had been introduced. I won't lie, I had my concerns. A shakeup like this can easily go either way and if not handled properly, it can easily ruin a franchise. More than that, Sara is a tough act to follow, so "the new girl" would have to be on point. I'm proud to state that the…

SECRET INVASION: DARK REIGN #1
[Queer Eye on Comics, Posted 1/5/09]
Lots of spoilers to follow so if you don’t want to know that the Scarlet Witch is the real power behind Dark Reign, don’t read any further. Well, if you are still reading, you probably know she isn’t really the one behind Dark Reign or at least, she hasn’t been revealed as the one yet. (Who is the shadowy figure behind the door?) Norman Osborn appears to be the prime mover of this EVENT! Osborn has been the leader of the Thunderbolts and because of his leadership…
