Bio: Howard Cruse is the creator of Wendel, the 1980s comic strip about a circle of gay friends that is collected in its entirety in The Complete Wendel, published in 2011 by Universe. His 1995 graphic novel, Stuck Rubber Baby, won both Eisner and Harvey Awards in 1996, and has since won awards in England and Germany. Re-issues of the Italian and German translations of SRB were released in 2011 along with a new Polish edition, and DC Comics, the novel's original publisher, itself issued a 15th anniversary edition in 2010 under its Vertigo imprint. Spanish translations of both SRB and Wendel were published in 2006 and 2004-05 respectively (the Wendel compilation being published in two separate parts).Stuck Rubber Baby's French edition won the Prix de la critique at the Angouleme comics festival in 2002. Many of Howard's underground comix were compiled more than a decade ago in the books Early Barefootz and Dancin' Nekkid With the Angels.

The Swimmer With a Rope in His Teeth, Howard's illustrated adaptation of a fable by Jeanne Shaffer, was published by Prometheus Press in April of 2004. Many of his comic strips, both old and recently drawn, are archived on his extensive website, Howard Cruse Central. Recently completed projects have been new comics created for inclusion in Jennifer Camper's Juicy Mother series and the second Robert Kirby-David Kelly Boy Trouble book collection, plus a five-page gay webcomic drawn for Tim Fish's Young Bottoms In Love anthology. Howard's newest book, From Headrack to Claude, is a compilation of Howard's gay-themed comix covering, with the exception of the Wendel series and Stuck Rubber Baby, the 33-year span between 1976 and 2008. Like his recently repackaged 1983 satirical fable Felix's Friends (subtitled "A Story for Grown-Ups and Unpleasant Children"), Howard is self-publishing From Headrack to Claude on a print-on-demand basis Lulu.com. In 2012 Northwest Press issued a digital iBook version of From Headrack to Claude designed for iPad. The Northwest Press app includes as part of the package Sean Wheeler's documentary about Howard, I Must Be Important 'Cause I'm in a Documentary, which was created for local viewing by residents of North Berkshire County in Massachusetts.

An array of Howard's drawings are decorating tee-shirts, mugs, mouse pads and other cool merchandise at his online merchandise shop, Cruse Goodies at CafePress. On Saturday, June 4, 2011, I had the privilege of attending the always fun and synergistic event called “Oso Oro”, the fourth annual event put on by Ivan Velez and Daniel Kim at the LGBT Community Center in New York. I’ve attended the event every year and have seen it grow bigger (no pun intended) and better each time. Prism Comics was one of the co-sponsors, so I went as a representative to report on (and enjoy) the event. “Oso Oro” is by design an extremely unique event, each time…
